“The Tired Sportsman” Oil on canvas c1900 by William A Breakspeare
William A Breakspeare was a London genre painter born in 1855, dying in 1914. He studied in Paris and was a foundation member of the Birmingham Art Circle. He was a member of the Newlyn School in Cornwall. He exhibited at the Royal Academy between 1891 and 1903 and at the Royal Society of British Artists and the Grosvenor Gallery. His subjects were mainly genre or 18th Century scenes.
His work is illustrated in the Dictionary of Victorian Artists and Popular 19th Century Painting-A Dictionary of European Genre Artists.
His work is represented in the collection of the Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery.
