Gilbert Scott Wright

SOLD “At the Theatre”

Oil on canvas c1930 by Gilbert Scott Wright.

Wright was born in Leeds in 1880 to a family of artists. He had no formal training but trained and worked with his older brother George before establishing himself as primarily a painter of hunting and coaching scenes. He exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1909 and died in 1958. Like many of his artist siblings he also worked as an illustrator and was a regular designer of The Princess Royal’s Christmas cards in the 1930s. This is a fabulously atmospheric painting with wonderful use of colour and attention to the fashion details. Interestingly two of siblings were fashion illustrators.

The painting has been professionally cleaned.
