“Country Town, New South Wales” Oil on board c1950 by Elaine Haxton. Elaine Alys Haxton was born in 1909, in Melbourne; she was a painter, stage designer and illustrator. She studied at East Sydney Technical College (1928) with Rayner Hoff, in London (1931-1939) with lan McNab and later travel studies in the USA, Mexico, Paris and Kyoto among others. Her decorative paintings, theatre designs and illustrations became well known in Sydney in the 1940’s when she was also the subject of a famous portrait by William Dobell. She was awarded the Sulman Prize in 1943, and the Crouch Prize (Ballarat) in 1946. In 1946 she showed her ‘Sydney Harbour’ at the UNESCO exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art, Paris.Her work is represented in the collections of the National Gallery of Australia, most State Galleries, and the regional galleries of Ballarat, Bendigo, Geelong and Newcastle. The work has been professionally cleaned and measures framed: 78cm wide x 61cm tall.
