SOLD "Pan" A superb bronze dated 1883 by Jean Baptiste Claude Eugène Guillaume. Jean Baptiste Claude Eugène Guillaume was born in 1822 in Montbard, dying in 1905 in Rome. He was a sculptor of busts and groups, as well as a writer.Guillaume studied at the École des Beaux Arts under Pradier, from 1841. In 1845, he won the Prix de Rome and was awarded a First Class Medal in 1855, and a Medal of Honour at the 1867 Exposition Universelle. He was involved in the decoration of many public buildings during the Second Empire, including the Louvre and the Paris Opéra, to which he contributed the facade group 'Instrumental Music'. He was appointed commander of the Légion d'Honneur in 1875 and became a member of the Institut de Paris in 1862. He was appointed director of the Ecole des Beaux Arts in 1864, subsequently managing director in 1879. He exhibited at the Paris Salon between 1852 and 1882.His work is represented in the collections of the museums at Amiens, Angers, Bayonne, Caen, Montpellier, Montbard, Montpellier, Paris (Louvre, MAM, Museum of the Comédie-Francaise), Rouen, Semur-en-Auxois & Versailles.
