'Steam and Sail'
Oil on panel c1850, signed by Pierre Julien Gilbert. Pierre Julien Gilbert was born in Brest in 1783, dying there in 1860. He was a painter and watercolourist of historical and military subjects, seascapes, harbour scenes and boats. He studied under Nicolas Marie Ozanne and Louis-Philippe Crépin. He exhibited at the Paris Salon between 1822 and 1859, receiving a Silver Medal in 1833. He was appointed Official Painter to the Algerian Expedition of 1830 and subsequently taught painting at the Royal Naval College. He was made a Chevalier of the Légion d'Honneur in 1833. His work is represented in the Museums of Brest, Nancy, Cherbourg, the Musée de la Marine, Paris, St-Brieuc and Versailles. His work is illustrated in Petits Maîtres de la Peinture (pp.477). The work has been professionally cleaned. Framed dimensions: 50.5cm x 31.5cm.
