‘Woman Reclining’ Oil on board dated 1956 by Jean Bellette. Jean Mary Bellette was a painter born in Hobart in 1909, dying in 1991. She studied at Hobart Technical School, Sydney Art School with Julian Ashton and the Westminster Art School, London, with Bernard Meninsky and Mark Gertler. She travelled and studied in Europe, married Paul Haefliger and returned to Sydney where she became a foundation member of the Sydney Group and the Blake Prize Committee. She exhibited neoclassic paintings of figures grouped in landscapes and became a leader in the Sydney modern movement. She returned to Europe in 1957 and lived and worked alternately in Spain, Switzerland, Paris & Sydney. She was awarded the Sulman Prize in 1942. Her work is represented in the collections of all State Galleries, the National Gallery of Australia and many regional galleries. Framed measurements: 64cm wide x 55cm tall.
