‘Summer Bunch’ Woodcut in colours by John Hall Thorpe c1930. John Hall Thorpe was born in Victoria in 1874, dying in 1947. He learned drawing and engraving whilst apprenticed to John Fairfax and Sons, Sydney. He studied at Heatherly’s and St Martin’s Schools of Art in London, in 1902. He was a foundation member of the New South Wales Society of Artists, and was elected a Member of the Royal Society of British Artists in 1912. He became well known for his coloured woodcuts of flowers, exhibiting at the Royal Academy, the Royal Society of British Artists and the Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool.His work is represented in the collections of the National Gallery of Australia, the Art Gallery of New South Wales, the British Museum and the Victoria and Albert Museum, London. The work has been professionally conserved and framed measures: 53cm x 72cm.
