SOLD: A very well executed view of Whitby harbour; oil on canvas signed and dated by John James Wilson 1847. Wilson was the son of noted marine artist John ‘Jock’ Wilson and was born in 1818 and died in 1875. He exhibited at the Royal Academy between 1835 and 1873 and his work is represented in the collections of the National Maritime Museum in Greenwich, the Folkestone Art Gallery and the Wolverhampton Art Gallery amongst others. His work is illustrated in several books including the Catalogue of the Oil Paintings in the National Maritime Museum. The work has been professionally cleaned and retains its original wonderful gilt frame.
