Paul Lewis Clemens pastel
A fabulous charcoal & pastel by American artist Paul Lewis Clemens: ‘Gay Nineties’ c1940. Clemens was born in Wisconsin in 1911 and died in Los Angeles in 1992. He studied at the Chicago Art Institute and began figure painting almost immediately. His work was exhibited widely in the US, including the Metropolitan Museum in New York and he produced portraits of Hollywood’s 1940’s & 50’s luminaries for Life magazine, including Katherine Hepburn, Frank Sinatra, Audrey Hepburn and Henry Fonda among many others. His work is represented in the collections of the Smithsonian and Whitney Museums in the US.
The work has been professionally conserved and retains its original gallery label to the reverse and measures 53cm x 44cm.
