‘Venus Escorted by Maidens’ Oil sketch on board by Portia Geach c1920. Portia Stranston Geach was born in 1873 in Melbourne, dying there in 1959. She was a painter, studying at the National Gallery of Victoria School between 1890-1896, then the Royal Academy Schools, London with Alma Tadema and Singer Sargent and at the Académie Julian in Paris until 1900. On her return to Australia, she set up her studios at 245 Collins Street Melbourne and exhibited regularly with the Victorian Artists’ Society from 1901 and with the Art Society of NSW from 1906. She was a committed feminist and in 1926 Geach exhibited with the Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts in Paris. Her subjects included portraits, mural designs and Australian and European landscapes and street scenes. She also exhibited in London and New York. Her work is represented in the collection of the Australian National Gallery, and State and Regional Galleries.The Portia Geach Memorial Award (established after her death) is considered the most significant prize for celebrating the creativity of female portrait artists in Australia.
