John Samuel Watkins was born in Wolverhampton in 1866, arriving in Sydney in 1882, dying in 1942. He was a painter and teacher, studying at the Royal Academy Schools in the UK, then the Art Society of NSW school with Julian Ashton, AJ Daplin and Frank Mahony, in 1895, subsequently Julian Ashton School from 1896 and Colarossi’s Academy in Paris.

He conducted his own school in Sydney for many years, was a foundation council member of the NSW Society of Artists, a Trustee of the Art Gallery of NSW 1932-1942.

His work is represented in the collections of the Art Galleries of New South Wales and South Australia.
