A superb oil on canvas c1800, attributed to John Hopper RA: “Portrait of a Young Lady”. John Hoppner was born in Whitechapel in 1758, the ‘son’ of a German surgeon. His mother was a German attendant or lady-in-waiting at the palace and it was rumoured that he as the natural son of the future George III. As the boy grew older, he was brought up in the palace to be a chorister in the Chapel Royal. Walton, the king’s librarian was given charge of Hopper’s education and the King visited the library constantly to note his progress. He entered the RA Schools in 1775, winning a Silver Medal for drawing from life in 1778 and a Gold Medal for his panting ‘King Lear’ in 1782. He exhibited 168 portraits at the Royal Academy from 1780-1809. He was elected Associate of the Royal Academy in 1793 and a full Member in 1795. He enjoyed a highly successful portrait practice and his portraits of the Princesses Sophia, Amelia and Maria led to him being appointed ‘Portrait Painter to the Prince of Wales’ in 1789.
His work is represented in the collections of numerous British galleries, including the National Portrait Gallery, the Tate Gallery the Victoria and Albert Museum, London, the Scottish National Portrait Gallery amongst others, as well as the Metropolitan Museum New York and the Hermitage Museum St Petersburg. The work has been professionally cleaned and retains its original wonderful frame. Framed dimensions: 81cm wide x 94.5cm tall.
