‘Titiania’ gouache by Edgar Ritchard c1930. Ritchard was born in Sydney in 1908 and died in London in 1984. He was a painter, muralist and graphic artist. He studied at the Sydney Art School with Julian Ashton and Thea Proctor; Chelsea Polytechnic with Henry Moore And Graham Sutherland, 1928 and the Slade School with Henry Tonkas. He designed costumes for a number of stage productions in London before serving with the Royal Navy during World War II. After returning to Australia, he became a member of the Merioola group c1946; after returning to London in 1948, he painted several murals including for the restaurant for the Royal Shakespeare Theatre Stratford-Upon-Avon, the Little Oratory at Brompton Oratory, London and Longstowe Hall Cambridge. He held solo exhibitions at Macquarie Galleries and later at the Qantas Gallery, New York.
His work is represented in the collections of the National gallery of Australia and the Art Gallery of New South Wales.
The work has been professionally conserved.
